Content writers are facing a tough time as ChatGPT, the generative AI service, is threatening their jobs. Recently, a copywriter for a tech startup lost her job because of ChatGPT and decided to become a dog walker. Similarly, Eric Fein, a 34-year-old content writer, was also replaced by ChatGPT, leaving him with not enough income to support his family.
Fein revealed that all his clients replaced him with ChatGPT after learning he used it to write his content. His clients realized they could save money by using the AI service instead of paying him. Fein charged $60 per hour of work, but after losing 10 clients, his income was severely reduced.
While one of his clients eventually did rehire him because ChatGPT’s content wasn’t good enough, Fein’s income was still not sufficient. As a result, he decided to switch careers and is currently training as a heating and air conditioning technician. He plans to learn plumbing in the future too.
Fein admitted that he should have chosen trade work earlier as it is much more future-proof than content writing. Apparently, trade work is one of the industries that, according to experts, will be least affected by advances in AI.
The concerns about generative AI causing widespread unemployment aren’t new. In fact, it is predicted that if AI technology becomes capable of doing more work beyond creating/writing content and generating photos, it will replace thousands of human jobs in the future. ChatGPT is already having an impact on the content writing industry, and this trend is likely to continue.
As AI technology continues to advance, it is becoming clear that many jobs are at risk of being taken over by machines. Those in industries that are likely to be most affected should start thinking about alternative career paths that are less vulnerable to automation.
