ChatGPT Makes Waves in Japanese Education

Date:

ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, is shaking up the world of education in Japan. As the new school year has begun, universities and the Education Ministry are taking necessary measures to discourage the use of this AI-which produces writings in natural style with instructions from users. This can potentially take advantage of passing reports and books without actually writing the reports by self. Kyushu University’s Vice President, Professor Takeru Nose, has commented on this while addressing a guidance session for upcoming freshmen. The university has also established a committee to look into the use of ChatGPT by the students.

The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry is looking into introducing new guidelines about ChatGPT usage for the students. They are working hard to come up with the material which can serve as a reference for the students to make a decision by themselves. Professor from National Institute of Informatics, Ichiro Sato, anticipates that if the students use this AI for their homework, the information fed by the AI might be incorrect for which there is no way to prove the innocence.

In the coming month of June, students who are in the junior year will have to go through the application process for internships. The process requires the applicants to submit entry sheet (ES). Companies are willing to accept the evaluations in the internship process while hiring a student. People are using ChatGPT to write Self-introductions, which the companies expect from the applicants. The companies, obviously, do not want the repetition of exact information to be inserted in the ES.

The problem of using ChatGPT has been discussed overseas as well. A survey conducted in Stanford University has stated that seventeen percent of the students are using AI to complete their exams and homework. To avoid this, the University has started to collect electronic devices and bags of the students during exams.

The New York City public schools do not allow the students to use ChatGPT in general conditions. The reason being it does not enhance problem-solving skills or critical thinking of the students. Moreover, Oxford University is one of the very few which does not allow the usage of ChatGPT for any of the academics or other purposes.

The company mentioned in this article is Bunkahoso Career Partners’ Recruiting Information Lab, a recruiting consultancy that helps companies and job seekers connect with each other. It provides recruitment-related services and HR-related consulting services. Keiko Hirano is the director of the lab. Her primary aim is to reduce the burden of students when filling the ES. She believes that using AI to form Self-introductions can be a popular option amongst the students which might make their application process easier.
