OpenAI recently released its first mobile version of its wildly popular ChatGPT service on iOS, which is now available for download in the App Store. This AI-powered chatbot is built on GPT-3 and provides users with an interactive experience, powered by the latest advancements in machine learning. As with the desktop and web versions, the app is free and promises to be always be so, however users have the ability to log in and upgrade to the premium GPT-4-powered services. OpenAI has also promised that an Android version for ChatGPT will be released soon.
The interface is elegantly straightforward and aptly intuitive. All the user has to do to start is tap the prompt window, which is presented with a white background and a black dot in the center. Users can then type in their query or select the voice option, which is transcribed by using Whisper-powered, open-source speech recognition technology. However, the voice recognition technology seems to currently be buggy, as the app failed to capture queries in multiple attempts.
In addition to queries, users can view their ChatGPT history to see all the conversations they’ve had going back more than four months. And since the history is synced across devices, users can pick up conversations across mobile and desktop whenever they want.
ChatGPT is developed and maintained by a capable team led by renowned tech entrepreneur Sam Altman. Altman has been at the forefront of analysis and application of AI technology and recently testified before Congress about the dangers and regulations of AI. With the release of ChatGPT, he is actively pushing the boundaries of open-source AI and is another promising step towards having AI augment humans in a positive fashion.
