Friends of the Irish Environment presented a unique poem composed by ChatGPT to Ministers with responsibility for forestry and land use in Ireland. The poem entreated the Ministers to lower the depth of peat soils that qualify for protection from forestry. Entitled ‘Planting on Peat Soils’, the poem draws attention to the United Nations ‘Report on Global Peatlands’. According to the report, even the thin peat soils (over 10 cm) should be protected from any disturbance because of the increased emission of Green House Gases. The project is significant because in Russia, for example, the same guideline would protect three times as much land.
The poem also emphasizes the negative effects of forestry, underlining that it ‘spells disaster’ on peat soils as it would eventually result in the release of GHGs from peatlands. In the end, the poem calls for ‘truth and action’ to be undertaken and for ‘justice reign, as one day it must’.
