Last weekend, Nine Mile Legacy Brewing in Saskatoon held an interesting competition to discover the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the brewing industry. Using an AI program called ChatGPT, the brewery was able to generate a unique beer recipe for their menu. After some modifications from assistant brewer Luke Clark, the business was able to create a beer called ‘ROBOTS’.
To test if the AI-generated recipe was better than the traditional brewing recipes, the brewery organized a brew-off and the attendees determined ‘ROBOTS’ to be their favorite. This allowed Nine Mile Legacy to understand the level of skill and creativity that can be achieved using an AI program in the brewing industry.
The brewer stated that ChatGPT did not replace the role of humans, as the first AI-generated recipe was nearly 40% alcohol content. Instead, they suggested that ChatGPT can be used to supplement the job of humans, making them faster in the process and allowing them to create more complex recipes.
The CEO of William Joseph Communications, Ryan Townend, recently commented on the use of ChatGPT by businesses. He suggested that it can be used for research purposes and help to cut down the time spent on performance analysis and content development.
Nine Mile Legacy is planning to have a second brew-off competition and are prepared to see what else AI can do to further improve the beer making industry. The two recipes, ROBOTS and HUMANS, are now both sold at Co-op, Sobeys, Urban Cellars, Nine Mile’s taproom and other locations.
Nine Mile Legacy is a microbrewery located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They specialize in producing artisanal brewery goods and craft beers with minimal intervention and natural ingredients. The microbrewery was founded in 2018 by three Saskatoon locals: Ryan Haerle, Garrett Pederson, and Jordon Foss. Their mission is to explore the potential of beer making while always finding ways to innovate and improve their services.
Luke Clark, who tweaked the original AI-generated recipe to make it an enjoyable beer, has been a part of Nine Mile Legacy since the beginning. He is an assistant brewer, a quality control analyst and a beer enthusiast dedicated to creating unique beer recipes for their microbrewery. His experience and beer-making skill helped Nine Mile Legacy to adapt the AI-generated recipe for the brewery. He is also passionate about exploring the boundaries of the industry to create better brewing processes for the microbrewery.
