Title: ChatGPT Experiences 10% Traffic Decline in June, Yet Remains at the Forefront of AI Chatbot Market
The AI chatbot platform, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has observed a decrease in global traffic during the month of June. This decline indicates a waning interest in the renowned artificial intelligence assistant tool.
According to estimations based on data from traffic analytics site Similarweb, both desktop and mobile web traffic for ChatGPT experienced a decrease of 9.7% in June. Furthermore, unique visitors to the site and user engagement, measured by time spent on the platform, dropped by 5.7% and 8.5% respectively. In the United States, the decline in site traffic from the previous month was recorded at 10.3%.
Despite this dip in traffic, ChatGPT still outperforms its AI chatbot competitors, including Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing, and another popular AI-powered chatbot called Character AI.
As the data was disclosed, some experts suggested that the drop in traffic may be attributed to students, who constitute a significant portion of the user base, being on their summer break, as well as the novelty factor of the AI chatbot wearing off.
However, a user from the community challenged this explanation, stating that the data did not account for the traffic generated by ChatGPT’s recently-launched iOS application. According to the user’s tweet, the decline could be simply attributed to a shift in the way users access ChatGPT.
OpenAI officially introduced the ChatGPT mobile application for iOS on May 18. Initially, the app was exclusively rolled out in the United States, with promises to expand its availability to other countries in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Lighting Labs, the development firm behind the Bitcoin Lightning Network, has unveiled a toolkit for AI-powered projects to facilitate the sending and receiving of Bitcoin (BTC) on its layer-2 solution. The company’s aim is to enhance the speed, affordability, and user-friendliness of payments for developers engaged in AI-focused ventures.
Though ChatGPT experienced a dip in traffic during June, it maintains its leading position among AI chatbot competitors. The true impact of the June decline remains uncertain, with the possibility that the reduced figures only reflect a shift in user behavior or the absence of iOS app traffic in the data analysis. OpenAI continues to innovate in the AI chatbot sphere, while Lighting Labs contributes to the improvement of payment mechanisms for AI developments.
