Title: ChatGPT Can Boost Writing Skills of Less Proficient Individuals, Finds MIT Study
A recent study conducted by MIT suggests that the widely used chatbot, ChatGPT, has the potential to enhance the productivity of workers while bridging the gap in skill disparities. This result raises intriguing questions about the advantages AI chatbots can bring to organizations and their ability to either replace or augment human labor, depending on their utilization.
Two MIT students enlisted the participation of 453 college-educated professionals from various occupations, including marketers, grant writers, consultants, data analysts, human resource professionals, and managers. These individuals were assigned two occupation-specific writing tasks, with the incentive of receiving bonus payments based on the quality of their completed tasks.
Half of the participants were given the opportunity to employ ChatGPT for assistance in completing their second task. They were also provided with guidance on how to effectively use the chatbot. The findings demonstrate that ChatGPT significantly improved the efficiency of writing tasks. Participants who utilized the chatbot reduced their worktime by an average of 40%, while simultaneously enhancing the quality of their work by 18%.
Interestingly, the study discovered that the most notable improvements were observed among individuals with weaker writing skills. This suggests that AI chatbots like ChatGPT have the potential to mitigate productivity inequalities depending on their application.
The researchers from MIT state, Inequalities between workers could either decrease if lower-ability workers are supported more by ChatGPT or increase if higher-ability workers have the skills necessary to take advantage of the new technology.
Furthermore, the study revealed that participants who had exposure to ChatGPT were twice as likely to continue using it in their real jobs even after the experiment concluded.
The researchers believe that depending on future usage, ChatGPT holds the potential to either entirely replace certain types of writers or significantly enhance their productivity by automating time-consuming components of their writing tasks.
They argue that in the latter case, these services could become more affordable, leading to increased demand, higher employment rates, greater productivity for companies, cheaper products for consumers, and potentially higher wages for workers.
