Approximately 80% of the participants opted to utilize the chatbot. External professionals within the respective fields evaluated the completed writing assignments using a numbered scoring system. Participants were also timed for each task and were financially incentivized based on performance, with a base pay of $10 and quality bonuses of up to $14.
The study’s noteworthy finding was that not only did productivity improve as expected, but the quality of the written content also saw a significant increase. Noy suggests that ChatGPT’s ability to generate well-structured sentences suited for simple tasks contributed to the improved quality.

According to McKinsey, adopting generative AI could potentially contribute between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy in terms of enhanced productivity. OpenAI estimates that 80% of jobs can incorporate generative AI capabilities, making it a focal point during recent contract negotiations, such as the Hollywood writers’ strike in May.
Participants in the MIT study expressed both enthusiasm and concern about AI in follow-up surveys conducted two weeks after the experiment. Interestingly, those who used ChatGPT indicated they were twice as likely to utilize the chatbot in their actual jobs. However, two months later, the likelihood dropped by approximately 20%, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the long-term impact of generative AI on the workforce and the economy.
Noy acknowledges that the future implications of generative AI remain uncertain but expects it to make a significant impact.
