OpenAI, a startup founded by tech billionaires, is pushing to widen the appeal of artificial intelligence by releasing a free app for iOS an Apple devices such as iPhones and iPads. The app rollout is the latest effort from the company to make AI technology more accessible to consumers.
Though the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot was already available through web browsers, the app now makes it easier for Apple users to take part in conversations with the AI chatbot on the go rather than having to use their web browsers. To achieve this, OpenAI has created an app for iOS – the operating system for Apple devices – as well as an app for Android devices which is set to go live in the coming weeks.
The company has acquired a lot of attention since the release of ChatGPT last year, including a mix of admiration and criticism due to how rapidly AI technology is advancing with currently hard-to-measure risks. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman even testified before the Senate, advocating for companies to require government licensing if they want to develop such powerful AI systems.
OpenAI has forged a close partnership with Microsoft to make this effort to broaden AI technology to more users a reality. With this app, there is now more competition as the Apple Store already has numerous apps powered by similar OpenAI technology. OpenAI’s mission to make state-of-the-art AI research more accessible and useful by turning it into tools that empower people is now a step closer to being achieved.
