ChatGPT CEO Pushes for Headquarters in Europe

Date:

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been touring Europe in search of a location for a new OpenAI office. The company behind the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, which can create texts based on written prompts, is seeking an office in Europe to comply with upcoming EU regulations. The new EU Artificial Intelligence Act will require companies with EU-based users to have a presence in the EU, with national supervisory authorities to ensure compliance. The Australian firm OpenAI has staff already working in London, but Altman is exploring the prospect of expanding in other European countries, including France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The eventual decision will have an impact on which member country will oversee enforcement of AI regulations, and which will host the world’s hottest AI lab.

OpenAI is a technology company founded by serial entrepreneur Elon Musk, and co-founded by such industry leaders as Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever. Its main goals are to develop and promote the creation of safe and friendly AI systems, to research scenarios in which AI technology could pose risks to human safety or lead to negative outcomes, to collaborate with other like-minded institutions, and to educate the public about risks and benefits concerning AI.

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, an entrepreneur, investor, and technologist based in San Francisco. Altman is known as the president of the startup accelerator Y Combinator, which has helped launch successful tech companies like Dropbox, Airbnb, and Reddit. He has been involved in numerous ventures in the tech industry, including Loopt, Wufoo, and Lugg, and serves on the board of numerous organizations, including the non-profit organisation GiveDirectly and the biotech company Freenome. Arguably, Altman has been instrumental in making OpenAI the technology giant it is today.
