OpenAI, the leader in generative AI technology, recently announced the launch of its latest Android and iOS app, ChatGPT, available for free download on the App Store. This announcement comes months after the development of the desktop version, which has been praised for its robust usability and interactivity.
The new ChatGPT app features a convenient, intuitive user-interface, automatic chat history syncing between iOS and Android devices, and enhanced voice input with OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition system. Its purpose is to provide users with instant answers to their queries, eliminating time spent undergoing general web searches. Plus, to enhance its core productivity and knowledge generation functions, ChatGPT Plus users will be able to access GPT-4 functionality, along with early access to new features and faster response times – with a subscription cost of$20 a month.
The introduction of ChatGPT to the Apple Store comes a week after Google I/O and the loosening of waitlist restrictions for Bard, the tech giant’s generative AI chatbot. The attention towards this kind of AI technology from major companies has been rapidly growing in a manner analogous to an arms race, exemplified by Microsoft’s plan to inject ads into its chat experience.
In light of this, OpenAI responded by rolling out an incognito mode for ChatGPT last month to protect user’s confidential data, although it is currently unclear if this feature will be available on the mobile app.
Despite the removal of unofficial services from the Apple Store, data.ai, an app store intelligence provider, reported $14 million in consumer spending on mobile AI apps this year. This indicates there may be commercial success for ChatGPT and other AI programmes on smartphones.
With its newest release on the App Store, OpenAI looks to make its ChatGPT technology more widely available to the public, contributing to its mission of empowering people through its AI capabilities.
