ChatGPT App Launches Internationally; Good News for EU-Based Users

Date:

Great news for the EU and its growing AI ecosystem: official ChatGPT iPhone app will be released in over 40 countries. OpenAI, a company focused on developing and innovating artificial intelligence (AI), recently announced that its ChatGPT app will be available for iPhone users in those countries. This could potentially revolutionize the way people use generative AI applications.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised the release, saying that it was the first step towards rolling out the app worldwide. However, just a week later, it became available in more than 40 countries, a huge expansion for OpenAI. This included several European Union markets, making it a great step forward for the entire bloc.

Altman has been a vocal advocate of AI regulation in the US, while he has been critical of the proposed EU AI Act, deeming it as “over-regulating” the nascent industry. He even made bold comments that OpenAI could pull the ChatGPT app from European markets if the Act didn’t see any changes.

This was not the first time OpenAI got into a row with EU regulators. Earlier this year Italy banned ChatGPT for a few weeks, citing privacy grounds. To prevent this from happening again in other EU countries, OpenAI included an updated setting in the app which allows people to opt out of data collection.

At the moment it’s unlikely that OpenAI will really pull out ChatGPT from Europe. The rollout is proof that it wants to make a name for itself internationally, having already gone through Italy once. Other products such as Google’s Bard and its new search AI are yet to become available in Europe, making OpenAI’s decision to go in with ChatGPT a brave one.

Besides iPhone, the official product is not yet available on Android devices but this might change soon. OpenAI will continue the rollout once its resources allow it. In the meantime, users should be sure to only use genuine products from trusted brands. While there are many AI products available online, some of them may contain malware which could put your data at risk.

Overall, the success of OpenAI’s rollout of their official ChatGPT app for iPhone in various countries across the globe is something to be celebrated. This will no doubt bring more attention to AI, its potential benefits, and the importance of being sure to only use trusted applications.
