Call Annie makes use of real-time conversion of linguistic prompts into visual cues, thanks to Apple’s Neural Engine. Through this, users can enjoy natural conversations with Annie, despite having a robotic voice. The app creators assure that interaction with Annie is “more natural and faster than typing and reading text.” From the looks of the sample videos on social media, there’s no doubt it’s a convincing video call interface.
You may be wondering if Annie can remember her conversations, making her a smarter friend. According to the app developers, Annie is “soon” to have a “memory” system. But already, she is quite good at holding a fluent conversation, able to give answers typical of those in texting conversations with ChatGPT. With enough time and improved voice training, conversations with Annie can become even more natural.
Unfortunately, Annie still has some minor flaws: she sometimes flubs in pronouncing words, yet learns right away when corrected. She also struggles with pronouncing words in languages other than English, something the developers are working to fix. In terms of security measures, Call Annie does not store user conversations and only transfers “transcriptions” to ChatGPT. Furthermore, users can delete their search histories in the app when needed.
