Teachers across Tampa Bay are reporting that students are using ChatGPT, an online AI tool, to cheat on their schoolwork. ChatGPT generates a response to a question that can be received in a matter of seconds, and the tool gives users the capability to copy and paste the answer for submission as their own. With this tool, it proves difficult for teachers to catch the cheating due to the convincing nature of ChatGPT’s abilities in mimicking natural conversation.
In response, Professor John Licato from the University of South Florida is revamping educational models to ensure that students focus on learning rather than cheating. His plan includes encouraging students to focus on completing their reading, studying, and testing outside of class. Assignments that are done out of the classroom are not to be graded.
Tutor Ashley Durham has had encounters with students using ChatGPT to cheat, which she believes could be damaging in the long run. She recommends that parents make a conscious effort to read and understand their child’s work. The tutor also believes in having conversations with students regarding the importance of learning and education and asks students “if they can take the knowledge acquired and use it six months afterwards”.
There are some apps available on the market to detect ChatGPT but Professor Licato has concluded they are not reliable. School districts all over the Tampa Bay area have taken the precautionary step in blocking the Open AI website from student’s computers.
