ITN, the UK’s largest commercial news broadcaster, has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) bots like ChatGPT could fuel misinformation and threaten democracy. The broadcaster called on the government to safeguard journalism against the impact of AI in the lead-up to next year’s general election. In a letter to the technology secretary, ITN Chief Executive Rachel Corp highlighted the potential for generative AI to distort audiences’ understanding of impartial and accurate information. Corp called for a dedicated AI and journalism working group to explore measures such as kitemark systems or changes to copyright law to protect trusted information. While acknowledging the benefits of AI in freeing journalists from administrative tasks and improving data use, Corp emphasised that the technology would never replicate the vital role of journalists in gathering information and being eyewitnesses.
