CEO Sam Altman Confirms GPT-5 Development Not Yet Underway at OpenAI

Date:

At a recent press event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed that his organization is not yet working on GPT-5. He referred to the letter signed by Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and others asking for a minimum 6-month time period before further Artificial Intelligence (AI) development in order to address the “profound risks to society” it might cause. Altman agreed to some of the concepts discussed in the open letter and added that OpenAI had spent more than 6 months after their finished product of GPT-4 before releasing it to the public.

Altman also pointed out that OpenAI is doing work on topics that relate to safety issues, which were not mentioned in the letter. He highlighted that as these AI capabilities become increasingly ‘’more serious’’, the safety bar also has to increase.

OpenAI is a research lab based in San Francisco, California and co-founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever in 2015. Its main focus is artificial general intelligence (AGI). Some of its main achievements are GPT-3, large-scale RL systems, and the language model MuZero. Last year, the OpenAI team released the fourth version of GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformers) that has fewer flaws than its predecessor, and more than handled complex tasks like passing the bar exam.

Today, OpenAI is investing more efforts into ChatGPT, a chatbot that is partially powered by GPT-4. In addition to OpenAI, Chinese Billionaire Alibaba has also unveiled its AI chatbot, equipped with both English and Chinese capabilities.

Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur, investor, programmer, and the CEO of OpenAI. He is also a president of Y Combinator, a seed accelerator. He has had investments and was an advisor to multiple companies like Airbnb, Stripe, Reddit, and SpaceX. He was also one of the first investors in many of Y Combinator’s famous success stories.
