OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) company led by CEO Sam Altman, may leave the European Union due to the proposed AI legislation on the bloc. During a fireside chat at University College London, Altman urged the regulator to alter certain aspects of the new rules or risk loosing OpenAI’s presence from the EU.
Under the current regulations, OpenAI predicts they may be required to designate their large AI models such as ChatGPT and GPT-4 as “high risk”, which would come with additional safety measures. While Altman said the intentions of the law are not inherently flawed, he commented that “subtle details here really matter” and that OpenAI may have to cease operations in the EU if they are unable to comply with the regulations.
Altman proposed a more moderate approach between the current EU approach and that of the US, stating that it should be taken into consideration. During an on-stage interview, he discussed the dangers of AI-generated disinformation that could have an effect in the 2024 US election and pointed out that social media platforms play a larger role in this than AI language models. Altman ended on a positive note, expressing his optimism and his faith for a future world where the benefits of AI would far outnumber the risks.
OpenAI is also working on a five-year research project on universal basic income that will conclude next year, which Altman proposed may be use to be to examine the possible implications of wealth redistribution.
