YouTuber Casey Neistat, renowned for his video blog (vlog) recordings, asked ChatGPT – an artificial intelligence (AI) tools available via OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus – to write a script for one of his vlogs. Neistat asked the chatbot to create a three to four-minute vlog featuring dialogue and a shotlist for downtown Manhattan in the daytime and include a brief cameo of his wife, Candice Pool, who works nearby.
The resulting dialogue was awkward, but unintentionally humorous, and Neistat said it was “the worst video I’ve ever made” with “no soul”. The vlog began with an aerial shot of downtown Manhattan from a drone – a classic setup for a Neistat vlog – and included footage of him zooming along on his electric skateboard around the city. The script had Neistat visit famous sites like One World Trade, the Oculus and Battery Park with a great view of the Statue of Liberty.
When he finally arrived at Pool’s office, the two of them read the script’s dry dialogue, which had her begin with a bland “Hi” to which Neistat replies “What’s new at the office, Candice?” and her response is almost as robotic as the AI scripting it: “were working on some exciting new projects, but it’s top secret for now, you’ll have to wait and see.”
At the end of the video Neistat admitted the video was “the worst” and that it lacked “humanity, depth and soul”. He further admitted to ChatGPT Plus that the script may have needed more “prompts” to make it more believable. Neistat added that he believes AI has potential, yet at the same time he hopes that the tools do not improve to the point it replaces truly original content – which he says requires creativity from humans.
OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT Plus, created GPT-4 as a way to develop AI technologies to support business operations. By providing more conversational-style AI that responds more naturally to people, OpenAI hopes to create a new way of conversing and conducting business. Thanks to their advanced AI systems, the company has been able to create the most human-like dialogue Watson has ever seen, making AI robots more useful to people.
YouTuber Casey Neistat has become a household name through his vlogs that feature his life in New York City. A tech fanatic and technological enthusiast, Neistat got the idea to ask ChatGPT to write a script for one of his videos. Despite the lack of soul and creativity, the chatbot’s script yielded an unintentionally humorous vlog that Neistat said still had “value to users” and proved to be entertaining.
