CARICOM and UNDP Discuss AI Regulatory Framework
Officials from CARICOM and the UNDP recently met to discuss a regulatory framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The discussions, held at the CARICOM Headquarters in Georgetown, focused on enhancing cooperation between the two organizations.
The meeting aimed to concretize a joint action plan as part of a 2024 Action Plan to operationalize the CARICOM-UNDP Memorandum of Understanding. This MOU, signed in September 2022, underscores the commitment to develop Small Island Development States (SIDS) in the Caribbean region.
Key areas of collaboration identified in the MOU include governance, climate resilience, sustainable energy, citizen safety, economic development, innovation, digital inclusion, financing, and institutional strengthening. The officials emphasized the importance of working together to address challenges faced by SIDS in the Caribbean.
A notable topic of discussion during the meeting was the development of a regulatory framework for AI. This framework is expected to guide the use of AI technologies in a manner that is ethical, transparent, and beneficial to the region’s development.
Overall, the discussions between CARICOM and the UNDP reflect a shared commitment to fostering sustainable development in the Caribbean region. By addressing key issues such as AI regulation, the two organizations are working towards a more resilient and inclusive future for SIDS in the Caribbean.
