ByteDance Suspended by OpenAI for Violating Usage Policies

Date:

TikTok parent company ByteDance has acknowledged using OpenAI technology to test its own artificial intelligence models. This admission comes after ByteDance faced suspension of its account by OpenAI due to concerns over the usage of its GPT data. A spokesperson for ByteDance stated that the company’s engineering team utilizes OpenAI’s GPT, among other third-party models, on a limited basis for evaluation and testing purposes. However, OpenAI’s services are not available in China, and ByteDance mainly depends on its own self-developed AI model for its product ‘Doubao,’ which is exclusively available in China. This revelation follows recent reports claiming that ByteDance has been secretly using OpenAI’s technology to train its own large language model, a move that violates OpenAI’s terms of service. OpenAI has suspended ByteDance’s account and is investigating the matter further. Other Chinese tech giants have also showcased their own ChatGPT-style tools, sparking increased competition in emerging technologies. ByteDance claims to have instructed its staff not to add GPT-generated data to the training datasets of its self-developed models. They have also provided compliance training to their engineering team regarding the terms of service when using GPT.
