Bugmapper: AI Revolutionizing Agriculture in Kayseri, Turkey

Date:

KAYSERI, TURKEY – A groundbreaking advancement in agriculture is taking place in Kayseri, Turkey, with the introduction of Bugmapper, an innovative AI system designed by professors Handan Altınok and Alper Altınok from Erciyes University. This AI technology aims to revolutionize pest detection and control in greenhouses, significantly reducing the need for chemical pesticides in farming practices.

Bugmapper operates through a user-friendly web interface and utilizes a smart trap to identify common agricultural pests such as tomato moths, thrips, and whiteflies. These pests are attracted to traps placed within greenhouses, and the collected data is then analyzed using a mobile application. The information is subsequently sent to cloud environments where the AI system categorizes and maps out the pests, allowing for precise and targeted applications of pesticides.

Supported by nearly TL 900,000 ($27,590) from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), Bugmapper has been implemented in greenhouse areas across Kayseri, Yozgat, Afyon, and Mersin. The system has led to significant reductions in pesticide use, with seasonal savings ranging from 30% to 50%. This decrease in chemical usage not only benefits the environment but also enhances the quality and safety of agricultural produce.

Professor Handan Altınok of Erciyes University emphasizes Bugmapper’s role in promoting safer food production by minimizing chemical residues through effective pest control. The system’s portability and ease of use make it a valuable tool for identifying and addressing pest-related issues within fields. Bugmapper’s efficiency in pest monitoring is unmatched, with the ability to analyze data from traps within seconds and provide detailed insights for farmers to plan optimal pest control strategies.
