Brazil Tops Latin America’s Innovation Rankings According to Global Index
Brazil has emerged as the leader of innovation in Latin America, according to the Global Innovation Index (GII) released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Out of 132 economies, Brazil secured the 49th position in the overall innovation ranking and claimed the top spot in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, surpassing Chile.
The remarkable rise of Brazil in the GII 2023 is not surprising, as the country has also made significant progress over the past four years, ranking fourth worldwide in terms of progression. Only the Republic of Mauritius, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia have experienced greater growth during this period. This achievement indicates Brazil’s commitment to innovation, particularly considering its position as an upper-middle-income country.
Brazil’s success in the GII 2023 extends beyond its overall ranking. The country has made remarkable strides in various specific indexes as well. For instance, Brazil now occupies the 31st position in the Intangible Assets index. Moreover, it leads the Latin America and the Caribbean region in the categories of Business Sophistication (39th) and Knowledge and Technology Outputs (52nd), showcasing Brazil’s innovation-driven growth in recent years.
Switzerland has retained its top position for the 13th consecutive year in the overall GII rankings, followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. In terms of science and technology (S&T) clusters, Tokyo-Yokohama in Japan continues to be the global leader, while São Paulo remains the only Latin American city to make it to the top 100. Notably, China has surpassed the United States in terms of the number of top-ranked clusters, with 24 compared to the US’s 21.
Despite the numerous challenges faced in recent times, the GII 2023 findings reveal a flourishing innovation environment filled with opportunities in various fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, genome sequencing, green technologies, and robotics. To overcome supply chain disruptions, inflation, and armed conflicts of recent years, countries must invest in these innovative opportunities.
The theme of GII 2023, Innovation in the face of uncertainty, aptly captures the positive showing of the Brazilian innovation ecosystem. It demonstrates the country’s resilience and potential for further development.
In conclusion, Brazil’s ascent to the top of Latin America’s innovation rankings is an inspiring achievement. The country’s progress in the Global Innovation Index showcases its commitment to fostering an innovative ecosystem. As Brazil embraces emerging technologies and invests in diverse fields, it has the potential to lead the region and contribute to global innovation initiatives.
