The first trailer for the upcoming Blue Beetle movie is out, and it looks like it’s going to be an action-packed adventure! The trailer features Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, an underemployed young man with a tight-knit family. One fateful day, his childhood friend Penny (Bruna Marquezine) entrusts him with a mysterious package which she pleads him to protect with his life, but which he ultimately can’t help but open. Inside is an alien artifact known as the Scarab, which bonds to Jaime and covers him in an exosuit of blue armor. This suit grants Jaime powers such as the ability to fly, shoot energy weapons, and manipulate matter. Later in the trailer, the exosuit’s onboard artificial intelligence informs Jaime that it can make whatever he can dream up. We see Jaime conjuring up the iconic Buster Sword from the Final Fantasy VII video game series, further demonstrating the power of his new armor.
The new Blue Beetle movie features Xolo Maridueña in his first major superhero role. Maridueña is an up and coming actor, having starred in the short-lived MTV series, Finding Carter, and Netflix’s teen drama On My Block. He also had a recurring role in the NBC series, Legion. Maridueña will be taking on the mantle of the Blue Beetle, a character that has been portrayed by several actors in different media. It is sure to be an interesting new take on the character with Maridueña at the helm.
