Charlie Brooker, the creator of the popular dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror, revealed that he experimented with OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology for the show’s upcoming sixth season. In an interview with Empire, Brooker shared that he initially typed generate Black Mirror episode to see what the AI would produce. However, he found the result to be a jumbled collection of synopses from previous episodes.
While the AI-generated content wasn’t up to par, Brooker admitted that the experience helped him break away from his usual writing patterns. He realized that he had previously written several episodes where characters discover they were inside a computer all along. As a result, he decided to scrap his preconceived notions of what a Black Mirror episode should be and give himself more creative freedom.
In a separate interview with Netflix’s TUDUM blog, Brooker expressed his desire to keep audiences on their toes and preserve the element of surprise in Black Mirror. He believes that the show’s stories should continue to offer something unexpected for both viewers and himself as the writer.
As the creator of a show that often portrays the dark side of technology, it’s no surprise that Brooker is keeping up with AI advancements. While the ChatGPT technology didn’t make the cut for Black Mirror, it’s clear that Brooker remains committed to using innovative tools to enhance the show’s unique approach to storytelling.
