Auto Show Shift: Cars Embrace AI at CES 2022
The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation as cars become increasingly technologically advanced. With this shift, traditional auto shows are losing their relevance, and automakers are turning their attention to events like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to showcase their latest innovations. At CES 2022, one trend stole the spotlight—artificial intelligence (AI).
AI-powered technologies were omnipresent at CES, extending far beyond the realm of car companies. From self-docking boats to flying taxis, it seemed like everything at the show was fueled by AI. Automakers recognized the potential of AI and its ability to enhance the driving experience. Volkswagen, for instance, announced its intention to integrate Chat GPT into its lineup, allowing Tiguan owners to engage in conversations with their cars.
Mercedes-Benz also jumped on the AI bandwagon, unveiling plans to offer similar AI capabilities in its forthcoming 2025 CLA sedan. Although not using Chat GPT like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz aims to cater to younger buyers who drive the CLA, diverging from its traditional approach of introducing new features in the S-Class model—typically favored by older drivers with an average age of 357 years old.
The presence of automakers unveiling concept vehicles further solidified CES’s new role as an auto show. Honda showcased the Saloon and Space Hub concepts, demonstrating their commitment to cutting-edge designs. Kia, too, introduced an exciting range of modular vans, capturing the audience’s attention. VinFast, a Vietnamese automaker vying to penetrate the U.S. market, exhibited a new pickup truck alongside a petite electric SUV. While the prospects of success for a 125-mile electric crossover, smaller than a Fiat 500e, remain uncertain in the U.S., many enthusiasts appreciate the charm of compact cars and wish VinFast the best of luck.
With AI taking center stage at CES 2022, it is undeniable that the automotive industry is embracing this transformative technology. The integration of AI-powered features not only enhances the driving experience but also appeals to a younger generation of car buyers. As auto shows evolve and give way to CES, we can expect further advancements in AI, propelling the industry into a new era of intelligent mobility.
