Australia is looking to regulate the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with industry leaders warning of the potential risks if it isn’t done carefully. Industry Minister Ed Husic has released two papers for public discussion on how to safely and responsibly regulate the use of artificial intelligence. He has suggested that potential bans may be considered in areas with high risk. The Australian government’s National AI Centre will receive AUD41m from the May budget for the responsible development of the technology, and a new responsible AI adoption program for small and medium enterprises has also been launched. Ed Husic said he wanted people to feel confident that the law is fit for purpose. Australia was one of the first countries to adopt AI ethics principles.
