Ubisoft has announced its latest installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, titled Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. The game will be released on October 12, 2023 for consoles, PC, and Luna. The game is set in ninth-century Baghdad during its Golden Age and centers around the struggle between the Templars and Assassins.
The protagonist is Basim Ibn Is’haq, a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones in Alamut on a quest for answers. Basim’s mentor, Roshan, is voiced by Emmy-winning actress Shohreh Aghdashloo. The game will feature a narrative-focused storyline, a majestic open city, and legacy gameplay focusing on parkour, stealth, and assassinations.
Rather than being an RPG like many previous titles in the series, Mirage will be more like the original game. The game’s focus on parkour, one of the franchise’s iconic elements, will take different forms depending on the setting and environment.
In the hands-off preview, the demo showed Basim performing parkour and taking out targets in broad daylight using throwing knives and diving into piles of grass to avoid NPCs seeking him. The game features improved AI reactions, but the NPCs still seem somewhat inept.
Mirage will be an homage to the first Assassin’s Creed game, which debuted in 2007. The game will have a coming-of-age storyline for Basim, who will grow from a street thief to a master assassin. The game is being developed by a team led by Ubisoft Bordeaux and more than 500 developers worldwide.
Ubisoft has also announced the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Nexus, a VR title for Meta Quest VR headsets. The VR game allows players to make lunging moves with their controllers to take out targets.
Assassin’s Creed Project Jade is also in development as a mobile game, which is set in the warring states of the Qin dynasty in the third century.
Overall, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage promises to be an exciting addition to the franchise, with its focus on parkour, stealth, and assassinations. Fans of the series can look forward to the game’s release on October 12, 2023.
