AI training courses have grown increasingly popular with developers, yet they seem unsure of how useful the skill set they gain in the process will be. According to research conducted by STX Next, almost a third of developers have taken AI and Machine Learning (ML) courses, making it the third most sought after type of training. However, when looking to apply their knowledge in the future, not many expected to find tools in Python or an IDE for Python, with just 6% believing so.
The Python TechRadar study further indicated that only 17% of participants picked AI and ML as the biggest potential breakthroughs for the programming language, taking precedence over things like performance. Meanwhile, 36% remained uncertain of the language’s future, yet were nonetheless excited to find out.
At the same time, many developers showed interest in acquiring more AI and ML expertise. 25% of survey respondents indicated they wished to further build on their skills in this area. That being said, more traditional expertise, such as in software architecture, development and leadership, are still of higher priority to most.
Understanding the need for better toolsets in Python and other language, STX Next CEO Ronald Binkofski suggested that future updates should comply with the developers’ demand and focus on enhancing the AI functionality. To ensure successful growth in this direction, he further noted that training should be broad and cover not only programming-specific knowledge, but general AI and ML concepts.
