Arab Fintech Forum Boosts Financial Innovation in Qatar
Doha, Qatar: The Arab Fintech Forum’s second edition commenced at The Ritz-Carlton Doha, where industry experts highlighted the fintech market’s potential in the region. Keynote presentations by President of the Arab Fintech Forum Malik Shishtawi and Mohammed Al Emadi, Senior Manager of Investment at Qatar Development Bank, set the tone for the day’s discussions.
President Malik Shishtawi expressed his excitement about the forum’s growth, citing increased capacity, participation, and new initiatives. Notably, startups had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas to potential investors for funding. The event also featured an award ceremony to recognize industry leaders and honor sponsors and partners.
Compared to the first edition, this year’s forum witnessed significant growth, accommodating over 200 members with 350 registered attendees. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, international participation was solid, with delegations from Italy, Greece, the UK, Germany, and Belgium present.
President Shishtawi emphasized the importance of active participation in such events to understand the opportunities and challenges within Qatar’s fintech ecosystem. While acknowledging the significance of government events in fostering local ecosystems and facilitating conversations with regulators, Shishtawi stressed the need for Qatar to position itself as a business events destination and fintech hub through active involvement in private events like the Arab Fintech Forum.
During his keynote address, Shishtawi reiterated the event’s commitment to driving real impact and facilitating collaboration among stakeholders. The forum provided a platform for industry players to engage in discussions, make decisions, and work towards achieving the objectives of digital transformation in the financial sector.
The two-day forum comprised panel discussions and workshops aimed at enhancing opportunities for startup entrepreneurs and allowing them to engage with investors directly for funding. Some of the topics covered included shaping the future of fintech in the MENA region, AI and blockchain in financial services, open banking and financial inclusion, and the opportunities and challenges in the fintech market.
