Apple Prefers Machine Learning over Artificial Intelligence

Date:

Apple is not a fan of the term artificial intelligence and has avoided discussing it during this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Instead, Apple chose to focus on machine learning and the functionality it provides to users. Unlike other tech giants such as Microsoft and Google, Apple is not yet ready to fully embrace AI. We do integrate it into our products [but] people don’t necessarily think about it as AI, explained Tim Cook, Apple CEO, during a recent interview.

Throughout the WWDC, Apple showcased several features powered by machine learning, including improvements to Siri and an increased focus on privacy. Although AI was referenced in a milder way, Apple chose not to use the term itself. This stands in opposition to Google’s I/O conference, which gave AI a major role in its discussions.

Apple appears to be focusing on the benefits of machine learning that align with its brand personality rather than getting caught up in the sci-fi sounding hype of AI. The company’s approach has been to develop and showcase features that are intuitive and user-friendly. By remaining low-key on AI, Apple is able to differentiate from other tech giants and emphasise its unique approach to technology.
