ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI using artificial intelligence, recently released its mobile app for both iPhone and iPad users. With its voice and speech-to-text conversion, ChatGPT allows users to have a conversation and it sounds just like communicating with a human. Many people have used ChatGPT to develop pieces of art such as poetry and songs, but now as an app, OpenAI is hoping it will reach even more users.
Open AI, founded in 2015, prides itself on its efforts to develop “safe AI” as well as generating content. Since the release of ChatGPT, the company said they have gone beyond their expectations with the massive reception to their product. Senior editor at MIT Technology Review Will Douglas Haven wrote in February that “Even OpenAI has been blown away by how ChatGPT has been received”.
The worry with artificial intelligence and programs such as ChatGPT is that they could be used for malicious activities such as spreading misinformation and even bypass security. CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman believes a new regulatory body should be created to control certain strong AI models. He mentioned in a Senate hearing that such systems could act independently of humans which could cause harmful effects to the world. He made it a priority to make sure the technology will be used correctly and not be taken advantage of in the wrong way.
For those who don’t have an iPhone or iPad, they can still access ChatGPT on OpenAI’s website. Just type in your command and ChatGPT will reply as if a human was speaking.
OpenAI is a San Francisco-based company, founded by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Jakub Stepien, and Scott Gray with goal to develop artificial intelligence research. OpenAI works in the field of advanced research in artificial intelligence, develop tools “which can one day lead to advances in many fields such as autonomous systems, healthcare, robotics, and manufacturing”. As of 2021, OpenAI has released GPT-3, a natural language processing model, and ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot. OpenAI hopes that its products will be helpful in many areas, including reducing or eliminating the need for repetitive tasks, understanding and anticipating customer needs, improving customer service, and increasing efficiency.
