Apple has recently acquired a French AI firm called Datakaleb, located in Paris, to enhance AI processing on the iPhone. This acquisition comes after Apple’s earlier purchase of the Canadian AI company DarwinAI at the beginning of 2024.
Datakaleb specializes in compressing algorithms, aiming to make processes more efficient and reduce energy consumption. By shrinking the size of algorithms, the company can enable devices to run complex processes like Large Language Modules (LLM) more effectively.
The acquisition of Datakaleb aligns with Apple’s strategic focus on developing technology that can operate entirely on the device, leading to improved performance and reduced reliance on external processors. Notably, the Paris-based company also has experience in facial recognition software, with past projects including monitoring mask-wearing compliance at events.
With a team of about a dozen experts, including alumni from prestigious universities in France, Datakaleb has established itself as a leader in AI compression technology. The company’s reported annual revenues of one million euro indicate a significant investment from Apple in acquiring the firm.
Apple’s pattern of discreetly buying companies like Datakaleb showcases its commitment to innovation and expanding its AI capabilities. The acquisition reflects Apple’s broader strategy of tapping into global talent and expertise to drive advancements in AI technology.
