Apology issued by ‘Humiliated’ Lawyer for Court Mistake on ChatGPT

Date:

A New York lawyer has apologized after using an AI-powered chatbot to write a legal brief with bogus case law citations. Steven Schwartz from Levidow, Levidow & Oberman told a Manhattan federal judge that he had been duped by the AI chatbot and felt humiliated by the flub. Schwartz had used ChatGPT to help find case law to support his client’s lawsuit, but the app completely fabricated cases without his knowledge. Judge Kevin Castel later grilled Schwartz for roughly two hours on how he could have allowed such a mishap to happen. There has been no decision on whether to issue sanctions to Schwartz or his firm.
