Andrew Bosworth, Meta CTO, Responds to Elon Musk’s Call to Halt AI Development

Date:

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth recently spoke with Nikkei Asia, criticizing a recent open letter from the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, which asked for the pause of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development. While co-founder of OpenAI Elon Musk has signed on in agreement, Bosworth has argued that halting development would be unheard of and would not promise a successful outcome.

Meta is a company founded on the promises of its own AI technology. Their chief technology officer, Bosworth, believes that responsible development of technology is crucial and that due process should be taken. In his words, the technology needs to evolve before one can truly create a safe, reliable environment. He has stated that pausing the everyday advances of AI wouldn’t be effective. This sentiment has been echoed by other influential public figures like Bill Gates, who believes this halt wouldn’t answer the challenges. Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman believes bad actors taking advantage of a development pause would be a huge risk.

With its headquarters in San Mateo, California and launched in 2018, Meta is a technology company that builds AI, computer vision, and natural language processing solutions. Its mission statement is to provide the highest and simplest functions for simplifying daily life. This includes the development of “fully-teachable” AI bots and applications, purpose-built to fit with their customers specific needs. Leveraging the power of both deep learning and reinforcement learning, Meta’s solutions are designed to be fully self-serving, eliminating the need for a manual coder and helping bring applications to life.

Andrew Bosworth, often referred to as “Boz,” is an engineer, manager, investor, and self-proclaimed tech visionary. As the CTO of Meta, Bosworth plays an integral role in shaping the company’s development. Prior to joining Meta, Bosworth held a number of positions at Facebook, acting as the VP of advertiser & business platform, VP of the virtual reality division, and the tech lead of growth. Bosworth has had a successful career, with positions in investments, engineering, and management. Additionally, he’s an active angel investor and advisor to a wide range of technology companies including Path and Upstart.
