Americans Trust Artificial Intelligence More than Fellow Humans, Survey Finds
A recent survey conducted by Ipsos Consumer Tracker has shed light on the complex relationship between Americans and artificial intelligence (AI). Surprisingly, the survey reveals that people tend to trust AI more than their fellow humans in certain aspects, despite concerns about potential biases and misuse.
In the survey, it was found that 43% of respondents trust AI to be free of discrimination and bias, slightly surpassing the 38% trust level for humans in similar contexts. This finding comes at a time when AI is raising broader concerns regarding privacy erosion, unauthorized access to information through human impersonation, and its impact on customer service and content creation.
The survey participants expressed significant apprehension about AI infringing upon data privacy and generating human-like content, with approximately three-quarters of respondents sharing this concern. Interestingly, these concerns were not influenced by recent news or regulatory efforts in the United States and European Union. In addition, two-thirds of respondents feared the misuse of AI in areas such as policing and corporate hiring, while 60% believed that federal oversight of AI was insufficient.
Despite the skepticism and fear surrounding AI, the survey also reveals a noteworthy level of engagement with the technology among Americans. Around one-third of the participants reported regularly using some form of AI tool, and 57% anticipate increased usage in the future. Nearly half of the respondents found these tools user-friendly. Moreover, in the workplace, one-third of individuals have received AI-related training, and 40% feel they have a good understanding of AI development processes.
This intricate landscape of trust, concern, and engagement underscores the growing influence of AI in daily life and the public’s nuanced perception of its role. Despite reservations, there is a gradual integration of AI in various sectors and personal use, indicating a cautious yet increasing reliance on these technologies.
As AI continues to evolve and shape our society, understanding public attitudes and concerns becomes crucial for its responsible development and implementation. The Ipsos survey serves as a valuable insight into the complex dynamics between individuals and AI, highlighting both trust and apprehension among Americans.
