AMD, the renowned US chipmaker, has partnered with leading Indian 4G and 5G equipment manufacturers to offer advanced telecommunications solutions in India. This collaboration, enabled by AMD’s recent acquisition of programmable logic chip-maker Xilinx, aims to bring cutting-edge technology to power radios, servers, data centers, and the radio access network (RAN).
Gilles Garcia, Senior Director Business Lead at AMD’s Data Center Communications Group, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, stating that AMD is committed to delivering power-efficient solutions to meet India’s increasing demand. With a workforce of 10,000 employees focused on research and development, validation, software development, and chip architecture design in India, AMD is investing $400 million in the country over the next five years to strengthen its presence in chip design and software development capabilities.
The response from local vendors in India has been positive, with major players in the 4G and 5G market and server manufacturers adopting AMD’s technology. Garcia emphasized that AMD’s focus is on fostering collaboration within the ecosystem to support local manufacturing partners like VVDN in producing servers and radio equipment. Although AMD, as a fabless company, doesn’t engage directly in manufacturing, it indirectly contributes to India’s goal of becoming an electronics manufacturing hub by partnering with local vendors and promoting the use of local manufacturing capabilities.
During the India Mobile Congress 2023, AMD showcased numerous designs incorporating its radio devices and a locally-made server with AMD central processing units. The company also highlighted its AI engine, which emerged from the Xilinx acquisition. According to Garcia, this AI engine will serve as the foundation for 6G networks, which are expected to revolutionize telecommunications with enhanced spectrum and efficiency, massive MIMOs, and AI-powered beam-forming capabilities. He believes that 6G will primarily focus on improving user experience and maximizing monetization opportunities.
AMD’s collaboration with IIT Madras on 6G technology further demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation. The 6G lab is utilizing AMD’s AI chips to conduct research on the next-generation telco network.
