The CEOs of OpenAI, Alphabet, Google DeepMind and Anthropic are on a European tour of governments to discuss approaches for regulating advanced AI with the promise of not letting the technology infiltrate and harm society. This tour of governments is being conducted due to an increase in concerns regarding possible adverse impacts of AI on public life.
Sam Altman of OpenAI, DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei recently met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to discuss how best to protect against the risks associated with AI technology. Sunak stated that there must be an appropriate approach to governance in order to secure public confidence in AI. The group touched upon a plethora of potential dangers of AI, ranging from online misinformation to national security and even existential issues. They also discussed safety measures that startups are taking, possibilities for international collaboration on AI security and regulations, and engaged in talks to coordinate AI efforts with the U.K. Foundation Model Taskforce.
Furthermore, the Google CEO Sundar Pichai conducted talks with the EU’s industry chief Thierry Breton about creating a voluntary agreement on AI practice before the EU AI Act is passed. It seems that Pichai has also met with the EU’s Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager where they exchanged their views on the rapid development of AI technology and the consequent need for a universal agreement on AI rules. It is expected that the European Parliament will vote on the AI Act in June though this may possibly become delayed due to conflicting opinions among the lawmakers.
