Alibaba – Chinese Tech Giant to Launch ChatGPT Rival

Date:

Chinese tech giant Alibaba released on Tuesday a new AI-powered language model called Tongyi Qianwen which is similar to the popular GPT chatbot. The new model is marketed to draft business proposals, generate invitations, summarize meeting notes and can even suggest which type of makeup is best for you by judging from the video demo. The AI is part of Alibaba’s cloud service and integrated into its messaging app, DingTalk and its voice assistant, Tmall Genie.

Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group, believe that this technology is the key to business’s success in the coming age of AI technology, cloud computing and “intelligence transformation”. The chatbot Tongyi Qianwen was welcomed with a post on social media, “Hello my name is Tongyi Qianwen, this is our first time meeting, I welcome your feedback!”

The AI chatbot race, has skyrocketed after OpenAI’s ChatGPT and many of its rivals have followed, such as Google’s Bard and Baidu Inc’s Ernie Bot. On Monday, the Chinese AI company SenseTime also revealed a chatbot called SenseChat with a lineup of a new AI products.

China’s Cyberspace Administration has also been drafting a regulation for generative AI services as more companies release these publicly available AI models. This law would require companies to submit AI products for ‘security assessments’ before being released and users to submit their real identity to avoid any kind of discrimination by the algorithms or training data.

Alibaba Group is a large multinational technology conglomerate that provides products and services such as e-commerce, retail, internet, and technology. Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma and 17 other partners, the company has since grown and expanded through a range of services and products. Presently, Daniel Zhang is the CEO of Alibaba Group, who holds the goal of bringing intelligence transformation, through the generative AI Tongyi Qianwen.
