The boss of OpenAI, the company behind the wildly popular ChatGPT bot, recently reassured concerned citizens that their AI technology would not cause massive job losses. This opinion was expressed by Sam Altman, the 38-year-old leader of the company, in Paris. He clarified that AI would not become so powerful that humans would no longer have any purpose.
Altman spoke further on how AI would affect the media industry, where several outlets already use AI to produce content. Rather than replacing journalist’s manual labor, he advocated the utilization of AI tools to assist them by providing additional help in researching and generating ideas.
The idea of OpenAI was conceived in 2015 and was originally a non-profit endeavor, with such investors as Twitter owner Elon Musk. Since then, however, Microsoft has made widely significant investments into the project and has integrated the AI technology into its marketing platform.
This development has enticed Google as well, leading to a fierce race for domination over the AI market. Likewise, Altman became a global star due to the company’s iconic ChatGPT model and the public conversations and essays it has been able to generate.
Elon Musk’s departure from OpenAI occurred in 2018; however, he has since been vocal with his opinion on the company. He seems to be critical of OpenAI, and has openly claimed that Microsoft now essentially runs the business. Altman denies this allegation, assured that OpenAI intend to continue doing business in the EU regardless of any forthcoming regulations.
As it stands, OpenAI has sought to use AI to maximize the benefits to society. Altman says he measures Artificial General Intelligence – that is, the superior machine that could solve fundamental equations of physics – by the ability to make groundbreaking scientific discoveries.
The company’s technology is often met with controversy, as its models have been trained with sources that are not made public. Though OpenAI has promised to address racial bias, publicizing the location of their trained models remains a point of contention.
The AI market’s rapid growth continues to draw attention and raise excitement. Nevertheless, OpenAI’s co-founder has expressed that it is a much exhausting experience, and he hopes for a period of peace soon.
