The Chair of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Lina Khan, has warned that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to “turbocharge” fraud and scams. Speaking at an AI and venture capital event in New York City, Khan observed that con artists have exploited AI voice-cloning to impersonate distressed family members to defraud victims. In one example, a scammer tried to extort a $1m ransom by cloning the voice of a 15-year-old to pretend he had kidnapped her. Lawmakers are preparing to introduce legislation governing AI. Khan warned that regulators around the world had failed to intervene during the internet’s early years and urged them to be “vigilant early” regarding AI.
