Security researchers have discovered that code hidden within PC motherboards manufactured by Gigabyte potentially left millions of machines open to malware attacks. The code was installed in order to enable the updating of the motherboard, but was insecurely implemented, opening a sort of back door for attackers to hijack the updater program and install malicious software. The scale of the threat is high, as the impacted models made up nearly 20% of the market in the US. The security company responsible for the discovery, Eclypsium, said the flaw had been present for about a year.
