Octopus Energy, a UK based energy supplier, has incorporated the use of artificial intelligence (AI) into its systems, which CEO Greg Jackson says is doing the work of 250 people. According to Jackson’s report, AI is replying to more than a third of customer emails and providing 80% customer satisfaction, more than the 65% achieved by trained people.
The Octopus Energy representative told Insider that AI sends out drafts of customer replies and thereafter, a team member reviews the AI’s work and sends it out. Employee from other companies have also reported their experiences with AI tools aiding their work, with one saying 80% of their job is done by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Although the AI implementation is unlikely to lead to job losses at Octopus Energy, Jackson said the advancement of AI technology could cause “huge and rapid dislocation” to the job market. This was also asserted by a report from Goldman Sachs which highlighted white collar workers as some of the most likely to be impacted. However, this report also claimed that AI systems can boost global labor productivity and create new job opportunities.
