Jakarta – The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has highlighted the significant improvements in safety and productivity in mining areas due to the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. By utilizing innovation and digitalization, mining companies can enhance productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness.
According to Agus Cahyono Adi, an official at the ministry, AI technology plays a crucial role in enhancing safety measures. It can detect potential hazards and provide early warnings to mine workers, thus minimizing risks. One particular innovation known as mining eyes conducts remote surveillance, reducing contact between workers and hazardous areas.
Rudini Rahim, Corporate Communication Superintendent of PT Berau Coal, explained that mining eyes integrates CCTV with mining analytics. This surveillance tool monitors and reports the movements of individuals and heavy equipment units within the mining area. By minimizing direct contact between humans and heavy machinery, operations become safer and more productive.
In addition to mining eyes, the mining industry also employs a digital innovation called BEATS or Berau Coal Green Mining System (BeGeMs) Automation Tracking System. This application supports the supervision and analysis of operational activities related to occupational safety, health, and the environment. Previously, such supervision was conducted manually. With BEATS, over 24,000 workers can be monitored effectively.
Furthermore, another AI-based technology used in mining areas is the driving monitoring system (DMS). Equipped with various sensors and cameras, the DMS keeps a close eye on mining vehicle drivers, detecting risky behavior such as unsafe driving practices, fatigue, and excessive speeding.
The implementation of AI technology in the mining industry marks a significant milestone in increasing safety and productivity. As mining companies embrace innovation and digitalization, the sector becomes more competitive. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s focus on utilizing AI to enhance safety measures indicates a commitment to sustainable and efficient mining operations.
The integration of AI technology not only ensures safer working conditions but also supports the overall welfare of mine workers. The use of advanced surveillance tools like mining eyes reduces the potential dangers associated with working in mining areas, aligning with global occupational safety standards.
As the mining industry continues to progress, stakeholders are encouraged to explore further opportunities for implementing AI technology. By embracing this digital transformation, the sector can achieve increased productivity, efficiency, and sustainability, ultimately driving growth in the mining industry.
