AI startup MindsDB has secured $25m in a seed round extension aimed at expanding its AI technology platform for software developers. Founded in 2017, MindsDB provides software that allows developers to integrate machine learning frameworks into their applications. The software has grown from an open source project into a commercialised software-as-a-service product, with over 100 data source integrations including OpenAI and Hugging Face. MindsDB CEO Jorge Torres said the firm’s commercial push was spurred by investor interest last year from Chetan Puttagunta of Benchmark. MindsDB has 82 paying clients, up from 15 earlier this year.
MindsDB’s CEO, Jorge Torres, co-founded the startup in 2017 with Adam Carrigan. Torres, a developer, and Carrigan, a mathematician, saw an opportunity for software developers to use machine-learning frameworks to help build their applications. MindsDB’s software includes more than 100 data sources and can integrate with other machine-learning engines such as OpenAI and Hugging Face. The surge of interest in AI and machine-learning following the release of OpenAI’s Chat-GPT tool gave MindsDB a boost, Torres said.
