Despite a bleak job market, the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is offering a bright spot for college graduates in China. According to local recruitment platform Liepin, AI job openings related to large language models, such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have surged 172.5% from last year. Large tech firms in China are searching for talent working in LLMs and AI-generated content, and are willing to offer high salaries. Roles involving algorithms, deep learning, and natural language processing, which are critical to developing ChatGPT-like services, are among the most popular jobs in the LLM field. Employment opportunities in the new energy and new materials sectors saw similar increases. China’s expected 11.6 million college graduates this year comes at a time when the country’s youth unemployment rate has hit a record high, reaching more than 20% in April.
OpenAI, founded in 2015, is an artificial intelligence research lab consisting of leading machine learning researchers who focus on advancing AI in a positive direction. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a conversational AI language model.
