AI Leaders Discuss Latest Projects at White House, OpenAI Investing $300 Million, Launch of Empathetic Pi Chatbot

Date:

Companies like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, among many others, all gathered in the White House with Vice-President Kamala Harris on Thursday. With President Biden even making an appearance, he noted that the potential of AI presented both enormous possibilities as well as dangers. He specifically targeted bad actors and their potential use of the technology in “winning wars or manipulating electorates.”

Additionally, OpenAI, the research laboratory supported by Microsoft and some of Silicon Valley’s most successful investors, had announced a whopping $300M in funding, bringing its valuation close to $30 billion.

But, amidst all this progress, there is a certain degree of regret on the part of Geoffrey Hinton, esteemed AI scientist and former Google employee. In a recent interview, Hinton admitted to having trouble seeing how bad actors would be prevented from taking advantage of the technology.

An AI-centric company Inflection AI was launched by DeepMind Co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and Reid Hoffman to introduce their “personal intelligence” chatbot, Pi. This tech is considered one of the world’s largest language models.

Amazon, the well-known e-commerce giant, announced it is developing a new large language model (LLM) that will enhance the abilities of its personal assistant, Alexa.

Almost in tandem with these positive developments was the recent identification of chatGPT malicious software that had been taking spam to unprecedented heights.

Metaphysics is a company founded to create deep fake videos such as the famous “Deep Tom Cruise”. It brings up a key question of whether AI will end up being an “eraser button”, allowing us to manipulate the experiences of our ancestors.

Finally, the popular tech show, “This Week in XR”, is produced by the author of AI Weekly (Ted Schilowitz) and Magic Leap founder, Rony Abovitz. Here two often discuss the exciting world of AI and XR topics.

As mentioned earlier, Inflection AI is the brain-child of Mustafa Suleyman and Reid Hoffman and the company has already raised an impressive $225M in funding. Their offering, Pi, is an AI-chatbot designed to provide a friendly and understanding listener and companion, remembering the flow of conversations for future reference.

Geoffrey Hinton, probably the world’s most eminent AI scientists, has been involved with Google’s AI as well but has recently communicated regret and fear as to the potential misuse of the technology by “bad actors”, as previously mentioned.
