The chief scientist of Meta, Yann LeCun, stated that generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the type behind ChatGPT, has reached a dead-end. He explained that machines lack common sense, and that new AI technology that resembles human rationality was needed. LeCun made these remarks at a Meta launch event in Paris, where the latest project, called image-based Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA), was announced. The JEPA is designed to move past ChatGPT-like generative AI, giving machines the ability to conceptualize abstract ideas, rather than imitate and reproduce what already exists online. LeCun said that new joint embedding predictive architecture technology would soon replace generative large language models. The Meta project led by LeCun is open source and aims to develop AI that more closely reflects how people understand the world. Meta has taken a less publicized approach to ChatGPT-style AI, fused in its products but without the same publicity as Microsoft or Google, alongside releasing open source AI models requiring less computing power than ChatGPT’s technology.
