Rumour has it that Apple doesn’t plan on releasing the AI health and fitness coaching service available on its Apple Watch until 2024. Codenamed Quartz, the AI coaching service could give tailored advice to its users by collecting data from the Apple Watch. It is rumoured to require a separate subscription. Along with Apple Fitness Plus, the AI system could explore a wider range of training recommendations such as recommending a specific exercise tailor-made to the user’s running history.
What’s more, the AI is said to be “tracking emotions”, which implies various features monitoring the emotional state of its users. As for now, nothing definite is set in stone yet and the technology might never becomes available. But it is certainly a feature worth looking out for.
Apple Inc., founded in 1976, is well-known for its innovative advances in consumer electronics. The highly successful tech giant specializes in computers, tablets, and smartphones, making them a mainstay in the tech industry. Apple is constantly pushing the boundaries of technology, being one of the first to introduce features such as facial recognition, AI coaching services and many more.
Mark Gurman is one of the industry’s most well-known analysts. Specialising in the Apple sphere, he is well-versed in the company’s new offerings and their trajectory. His work has been featured in multiple publications such as Bloomberg, 9to5Mac and The Wall Street Journal. He is credited with correctly predicting the release of Apple’s Airpods Pro. He is currently the editor-at-large for the first-ever Apple publication, Apple Insight.
Although exciting and intriguing, many are calling for caution over Quartz. Garmin already offers an AI service which suggests exercises based on data collected from the watch. But unlike Quartz which is said to be designed to learn from its user, Garmin’s service follows a preset algorithm which doesn’t improve over time. Amazon attempted something similar to Quartz called Tone, which attempted to track the user’s emotions and serve them workouts accordingly. It was met with accusation of being dangerous and potentially harmful.
As it stands, the AI Quartz services proposed by Apple are still in its nascent stage. Should it come to fruition, Apple has urged caution and has stated that the AI should be deployed under the guidance of experts. Until then, exciting as it may be, all we can do is wait and see how Apple’s Quartz develops.
