Asia’s largest genre film festival, the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, has introduced a groundbreaking new category this year – movies made with artificial intelligence. This 11-day festival in South Korea showcases over 200 short and feature films from across the globe, with an added focus on films created using AI technology.
The AI category at the festival will evaluate films not just based on their technological innovation but also on their artistic value and underlying message. One standout entry is ‘One More Pumpkin,’ a film by director Kwon Han-seul that was completed in just five days. The movie, which scooped the best picture award at the Artificial Intelligence Film Festival in Dubai earlier this year, follows the story of an elderly couple living on a pumpkin farm who challenge the boundaries of mortality.
This move to include AI-generated films at a prestigious film festival marks a significant shift in the industry, opening up new possibilities for filmmakers and creators. As technology continues to advance, it is exciting to see how AI can be harnessed to push the boundaries of storytelling and creative expression on the big screen.
