Top executives and experts in artificial intelligence (AI), including CEOs of leading AI firms and professors from various institutions, have written a letter raising the risk of extinction from AI. The letter has called upon policymakers to prioritize the risk associated with AI at par with existential threats like pandemics and nuclear war. It follows a similar letter issued a few months ago by Elon Musk and other AI industry experts. The fear arises from AI’s capabilities to lead to privacy infringement, misinformation campaigns, and self-thinking smart machines. Recently, CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, received criticism after he referred to European Union (EU) regulations on AI as over-regulation and threatened to leave Europe. However, he has now reversed his stance following criticism from politicians.
